Watch Desi Burgart and Justin Wilson dangle...

Stickhandling is an under-rated skill.

Hockey players all want to work on their shot. This is great, but how do you get in a position to shoot?

You need to be able to skate.

Alright, once we've got the skating down, the shooting will take care of itself, right? Well, what about the puck? How do we get the puck in a position to shoot?

We have to carry it there.

Here's Desi Burgart and Justin Wilson working on their stickhandling.

Tip #1: Engage Your Core

In the video below, we can see that Desi's entire body moves in rhythym with his hands. The edges of his skates are active, his legs are bent, his hands are away from his body and his arms move independently of one another.

Tip #2: Keep Your Eyes Up

We've all heard the saying "keep your head up." The problem with this is that too often we forget about the lower body. The head can be up and the eyes still down which damages on-ice awareness.

Watch Justin handle the puck through the hurdle with his body low, his hands wide and his eyes up.

Stickhandling takes time to master - indeed, no one has yet.

Except Doug Weight. He was the best. Too bad he played for the Oilers.

Improve your stickhandling drastically and then put your moves to the test in the Bantam/Midget Battle Camp (Aug 5th - 8th)
