Offensive Zone Play

(Forwards & Defense) + PASSING and Positional Play

The fastest object on the ice and the most prized possession is the puck. Goals are rarely scored on an individual effort; goals are almost always a product of some form of a pass. Hockey is the fastest game on earth and the ability to make split second decisions is crucial. This program will focus on: Passing (Variety of drills and passing techniques both stationary and with movement, discussing lanes and other technical thought processes), zone entries (Catch and carry, chip off wall, area passes, delays, cross and drops, net drives, etc.), wall work – (Opening-up for plays, receiving rimmed pucks and making plays, puck protection and battling), low attacks – (Plays off cycles, low plays, net drives, evasive techniques), net front – (Goal scoring specific drills emphasizing elevation of pucks in tight, hand-eye drills from point shots and mid-air pucks, creating space and goal scoring tips).

Skating That Translates

Ben Payne’s SKTT program focuses on game specific power skating and edge work. At Skating That Translates® players will not only learn “HOW” to effectively Skate but the importance of the “WHY” and “WHERE” The game of hockey is predicated on recurring movement patterns. The more times players are put in game–like environments in practice and development sessions, the higher probability to convert a high success rate when they encounter these situations come game time. For example, attacking and defending the rush, space and separation, agility  and mobility in small areas on both the defensive and offensive side of the puck all require technical and tactical ability. Skating That Translates develops the entire skill set of a player and builds layers on top of the foundation of skating. If you cannot skate you cannot handle the puck, pass or shoot efficiently. Therefore you will not be effective in an individual tactical situation and team setting. Skating That Translates® takes power skating and “Edge- work” one step further. Skating, skill development and IQ rolled

into one program. Ben Payne and SKTT teach the “HOW” & “WHY” in skating skill development. Full hockey equipment is required. Coach: Ben Payne

Body Contact

Body contact is an inevitable part of hockey, and a vital skill for all hockey players in the game today. For players making the jump

from non–contact hockey, the game is played differently than what they are used to. This program will teach players the importance of using their body to not only protect themselves and separate their opponents from the puck, but using their bodies to maintain puck possession and put themselves in good positions to make plays. Keeping ones’ head up, and learning to accept, lean on and spin off opposing players will be focal points of the program. This program will help you learn the techniques needed to protect yourself, and use body contact to your advantage.

Summer Camps

Our 2024 Summer Hockey Program and Camps will be published 2024.

Open Hockey

Open Hockey is one of the greatest features of being a member at NSWC.  In Vancouver, we aren’t given the opportunity to play pickup pond hockey very often or have empty arenas where kids can just step on the ice in the old barn when the rink guy gives us a spare key but at NSWC we have the next best thing, Open Hockey.

Open Hockey is our member’s opportunity to play, practice and enjoy hockey in a non-structured capacity.  We have the skills ice, fondly referred to as ‘The Tube’, which is almost always open, or a random sheet of ice that happens to be free, Open Hockey allows members the chance to skate, shoot and play without coaches or teams organizing the session.  Whether a player just wants a few more reps for 5 minutes after practice, or wants to shoot pucks for an hour instead of watching their siblings ice times, Open Hockey gives them an opportunity that doesn’t exist in a traditional Minor Hockey organization.

Every participant, regardless of age, must wear a helmet and any player under 18 must be in full hockey gear.

Men’s Hockey is governed by the Minor Hockey Committee, who’s mission it is to maintain a league comprised of balanced and equitable teams, to foster a spirit of competitiveness among members, and to welcome new members into a friendly and enjoyable hockey focused organization.

Divisions

Division 1

Men’s Division 1 is a fast, competitive league with a lot of young players. They enjoy the quick competition with a friendly rivalry between teams. There is a draft for new teams each year to mix up the players and create a more social atmosphere.

Division 2

Men’s Division 2 is the same format as Division 1 where it offers friendly rivalries, good competition, and a draft each year; however, the pace is slightly slower. This is the division that is best suited for those who don’t want to be playing with skaters coming out of Minor Hockey! Division 2 also welcomes all new players to come out and play. The league averages six games a month, typically every Sunday and on two Wednesdays.

Annual All Star Game

Every Super Bowl weekend, the NSWC organizes multiple All Star games on the Friday to showcase the numerous talented members who play in our league. This fun night includes a buffet, drink specials, exciting hockey games to watch, and an overall good time!
